To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

Christian Principles and Values

Founded in 1844 as a Bible study for young men in London, England, the Young Men's Christian Association is now a leading worldwide nonprofit organization with a mission of serving communities by serving individuals and families without regard to religious beliefs, gender, age, physical abilities or financial status. Program activities, guidelines and governing principles are based on values and ideals that are important not only in the Christian faith, but are common throughout other faiths as well.

The core values of the YMCA are: caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

The YMCA Mission in Action

Spirit refers to self-esteem and willingness to help others, and the activities that develop these qualities. It includes the application of the YMCA core values: caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. It also includes a sense of peace of mind, fun and a climate of positive energy. YMCA activities include collaboration with others, conflict-resolution skills and opportunities for success regardless of ability. "Healthy spirit" activities and amenities include chapel, Bible studies, worship services and inspirational branch signage.

Mind refers to activities that promote learning and intellectual development. YMCA activities include and encourage problem-solving, using gathered knowledge, having high expectations each time an activity is undertaken, and instilling a sense of personal responsibility for one's development. "Healthy mind" activities include character development, English as a Second Language, Spanish classes, Youth in Government, after-school tutoring and Head Start.

Body refers to health and wellness, and the activities that promote these qualities. YMCA activities encourage healthy lifestyle choices and promote overall physical well-being through education and application. The YMCA offers opportunities for both individual and group activities that improve the quality of life for participants and contribute to good community health. "Healthy body" activities include individual and group fitness programs, Healthy Kids Day, youth and adult sports teams, swimming and water-safety classes, water aerobics and rehabilitation, health fairs and screenings, and specialty classes.
