Activities for active older adults promote functional fitness and overall wellness as well as provide support, friendship, fellowship and fun social experiences. Health Seminars and Information Fairs The YMCA staff participates in a number of senior seminars and health fairs in the community. YMCA branches also host similar fairs, providing information on nutrition, physical and mental health, personal safety and protection, emergency procedures, etc. Water Exercise and Therapy Water exercise and therapy programs have proven to be very effective in improving cardiovascular and muscular function for individuals of all ages. Water exercise programs can also help improve muscle and joint function for individuals suffering from arthritis. The YMCA water therapy program meets the Arthritis Foundation standards - providing a cardiovascular workout with minimal strain on the body. Fitness and Wellness Everyone, but particularly older adults, can benefit greatly from both water- and land-based cardiovascular, strength and flexibility programs. Personalized fitness programs are provided free of charge and are available to YMCA members of all ages. Personal fitness programs for the Active Older Adults group begin with a functional fitness assessment, including blood pressure checks and cardiovascular screening. Follow-up programs include strength training, and group and water exercise. Comprehensive personal fitness programs may be designed to meet an individual's particular needs. Fellowship Many social activities are designed to meet the needs and interests of our Active Older Adults group. Programs include day trips and social outings, special events, gaming (bridge, bingo, board games, etc.), and potluck luncheons. Volunteer Activities Many of our Active Older Adults choose to get involved in the YMCA by volunteering. A variety of opportunities are available, including office assistance, facility maintenance, special events, coaching/mentoring, delivering meals to homebound seniors and fundraising. |
