The Estupinan Family’s Hope

The Estupinan Family started off in Memphis like many Hispanic families. Financially, they are better off in the US, but at the price of social isolation that studies have shown could lead to unfavorable health outcomes. The Y provides a partial replacement for missing extended family for people like the Estupinans.

Whether it’s by teaching living and language skills to the whole family, or giving the children a better opportunity through our multicultural achievers and apprenticeship programs we have something for every member of the family. With the Y and help the Y can mediate, our community’s newest families can be healthier and happier, therefore making our community stronger. Mother Marta Estupinan initially contacted the Y to find help for her son who was diagnosed with borderline childhood diabetes.

“Once we stepped into the Y, our lives changed completely. I personally have lost over 40 lbs., Heron has lost weight and become more outgoing, and Alejandra got into an English as Second Language program that helped her go in two grades ahead of where she was initially placed because of the language barrier. As a family we have learned so much through the courses at the Y. Now we feel more settled in Memphis and don’t think so much about going back to Mexico. The Y has become part of our family.”—Marta Estupinan
