Seniors

Seniors can find many enriching programs at the YMCA

"I maintain my diabetes and heart condition by exercising at the Y. This place is like a family! I encourage other people in my age group to exercise, because it makes you feel young again and helps you to enjoy life!"
—Charles C., Silver Sneakers Member, Open Doors Recipient

More than 3,200 seniors belong to YMCA of Memphis & the Mid-South branches. Activities at the YMCA for active older adults promote functional fitness and overall wellness as well as provide support, friendship, fellowship and fun social experiences.

Hypertension

Water Exercise and Therapy

Water exercise and therapy programs have proven to be very effective in improving cardiovascular and muscular function for seniors. Water exercise programs can also help improve muscle and joint function for individuals suffering from arthritis. The YMCA water therapy program meets the Arthritis Foundation standards—providing a cardiovascular workout with minimal strain on the body.

Fitness and Wellness

Everyone, but particularly older adults, can benefit greatly from both water- and land-based cardiovascular, strength and flexibility programs. Personalized fitness programs are provided free of charge and are available to YMCA members of all ages. Programs begin with a functional fitness assessment, including blood pressure checks and cardiovascular screening. Follow-up programs include strength training, and group and water exercise. Comprehensive personal fitness programs may be designed to meet an individual's particular needs.

Fellowship

Many social activities are designed to meet the needs and interests of our active older adults group. Programs include day trips and social outings, special events, gaming (bridge, bingo, board games, etc.) and potluck luncheons.

Volunteer Activities

Many of our active older adults choose to get involved in the YMCA by volunteering. A variety of opportunities are available, including office assistance, facility maintenance, special events, coaching/mentoring, delivering meals to homebound seniors and fundraising.

SilverSneakers® Fitness Program

The SilverSneakers® Fitness Program provides a YMCA membership, including access to customized fitness classes, state-of-the-art fitness equipment, indoor and outdoor pools, educational seminars and more.

SilverSneakers® offers a creative blend of social functions, physical activity and healthy lifestyle changes that allow older adults to take better care of their health. This program also allows older adults to take greater control of their health. Our customized SilverSneakers® classes are designed especially for those wishing to improve their range of motion, balance, flexibility and strength.
