Parent Orientation Guide
2012 Swim Lessons

The Davis YMCA and our aquatic staff welcome you and your children to our swimming program. We have put together a few guidelines in order to run classes as smoothly as possible, ensure the safety of your children, and help parents understand what we are trying to achieve in our swim program.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact our Aquatic Director, Ashley Chism, at (901) 398-2366 or achism@ymcamemphis.org

Please note that the first day of class is used to evaluate what level your child should start in. This is time consuming, but is in the best interest of the child, so we can start him/her on the level that best suits their ability.

1. Please bring your child early, dressed in swimsuit. Report to Indoor pool and show card to instructor. Please wait in locker room until instructor calls for class to begin.

2.  Proper swimwear must be worn in class. No gym shorts or cut offs will be allowed.

3. No male children over the age of 5 will be allowed in the ladies locker room. No female children over the age of 5 will be allowed in the Men’s locker room.

4. While waiting please have child use the restrooms, shower, and bring clothes to pool area. We are not responsible for lost items and left items will be thrown away at the end of the day.

5. Parents and siblings may watch from outside the pool area. We do not allow parents to sit on the deck because it is distracting to the classes being taught. Parents and other siblings are not allowed to have free swim during classes.

6. When class is over please pick up your child promptly. Our instructors must clear the pool area before the next class is allowed to enter the pool.

7. Class time is for the children who are enrolled in that class; if you have any questions please wait until the end of the class.15 minutes between classes is allotted to give parents the chance to ask questions.

8. If your child has a health problem please notify your Child’s instructor or the aquatics director. Note: We do not make up classes unless the Davis YMCA cancels a class due to circumstances beyond our control.

9. Swim lessons may be canceled if there is inclement weather.  Please contact the Davis YMCA one hour before class to see if lessons are canceled during bad weather.

*Make up classes will be held on Friday of that week for any canceled weekday lessons ** Saturday lessons will be made up at the end of the session.

The last day of class we invite all parents to come into the pool area and observe your child’s progress. This is a day for students to show off what they have learned. Please feel free to bring in cameras or video recorders to capture your child’s accomplishments.

Progress reports will be handed out at the end of each session. If you sign your child up for   another session, please bring the progress card back, so the instructor may continue your child’s progression.
Note: it usually takes an average of 3 sessions to complete each level, please do not be discouraged if your child does not complete a level in one session. Every skill must be mastered to move to next level.
