Swim Testing

Swim Test

At the Y, one of our top priorities is helping youth practice safety around water. Anyone under age 16 using YMCA pools will be required to take a swim test each calendar year. Those who choose to opt out of the swim test will be administered a red wristband and be required use a coast-guard approved flotation device.

Swim testing is a way to increase our level of vigilance with water safety. Our swim tests and swim lessons also give children a sense of achievement as they move towards the green swim level.

OUR SWIM TEST CRITERIA TO RECEIVE A GREEN WRISTBANDS

  • Swim 25 yards from the shallow end to the deep end without stopping or touching the side of the pool.
  • Can get out of the pool onto the deck from the deep end unassisted.
  • Can jump into the deep end fully submerged.
  • Can return to the surface of the water and must get out of the pool onto the deck from the deep end unassisted.
  • Those who are unable to complete the swim test or choose not to take the test will receive a red wristband, may only swim in the shallow part of the pool, and must use a coast-guard approved flotation device.
  • All Children 5 years and under must have an adult in the water within arm's reach even if they are wearing a flotation device, unless they swim at the green band level.

For the safety of members & guests, all swimmers under the age of 16 must wear a wristband based on swimming ability to enter the pool.
