Our Y Transitions to Support Healthcare Workers and First Responders

In response to the recent school closures and CDC guidelines regarding social distancing, the YMCA of Memphis & the Mid-South has transitioned focus to providing emergency care to Healthcare Workers and other first responders in the community who may be finding themselves without childcare during the COVID-19 crisis.

“The YMCA is prepared to react to this growing social crisis,” said Jerry Martin, CEO for YMCA of Memphis & the Mid-South. “Because of the evolving rules governing the coronavirus, the impact of school closures, and the growing demand on medical professionals, we are transitioning many of our Y centers to support doctors, nurses, technicians, other medical staff, and first responders to care for their children during this crisis. We want to make sure medical professionals in our community don’t have to worry that their children are in a safe place, as they care for a growing number of our loved ones during this difficult time.”

Effective Thursday, March 19, 2020, Healthcare & First Responder Childcare will be offered 7 days a week from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM to accommodate a 12-hour shift schedule for these families. Care will be supervised by trained childcare team members for children ages 3 years (potty trained) to 12 years of age.

"We have put safety precautions in place and have been working with CDC, local health departments, and state and local governments to ensure that we are able to offer this emergency care," said Martin.

Throughout all YMCA of Memphis & the Mid-South branches, group exercise classes, sports, senior activities, drop-in child watch, team practices, youth programs, and swim lessons are temporarily suspended under the guidance of the CDC to promote social distancing.
