What is Y-CAP? (The “CAP” stands for Community Action Program)

Y-CAP redirects youth (10–16 years old) behavior by teaching values and rebuilding families. It is a:

  • Faith-based program that works with at-risk youth and includes the entire family.
  • Program that emphasizes four specific values—caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
  • Program whose primary goal is to help youth become productive members of the community.

Are Y-CAP youth referred into the program?

Yes. For example, youth may be referred into the program by school professionals because of truancy, poor academic performance, behavior issues or family situation. Juvenile court may refer a youth in situations concerning a first-time minor offense. Y-CAP also accepts referrals from other community organizations.

Is Y-CAP effective?

Yes. The statistics show that Y-CAP is very effective:

  • 62% of Y-CAP program participants have demonstrated improved academic performance
  • 86% of Y-CAP program participants have demonstrated improvement in or maintenance of satisfactory school attendance
  • 68% of Y-CAP program participants have demonstrated improved behavior in school or maintenance of satisfactory conduct

—Mr. Frank Drowota, Former Tennessee Supreme Court Justice
