Ellis & Associates Certification

Whether you are looking for a great summer job or career as a professional lifeguard, the YMCA of
Memphis and the Mid-South Lifeguard program is the place to begin! Through classroom activities, group discussion, online e-learning, and hands-on practice, you’ll learn the skills you need to work as a lifeguard. The steps to successfully completing this program are completing/passing swim assessment, meet training prerequisites, pass all certification requirements, and received final student evaluation.  

All participants must be 16 years of age, have access to a computer and email for the eLearning  lessons, and pass the swimming skills assessment on the first night of class. Participants will need to bring the following items to all classes swimsuit, towel, class materials (provided), and all homework. eLearning assignments are indicated on the class syllabus. 100% attendance is required; no make-up dates are offered.

Total Course Fee: $200

Includes: Training materials, class time, background check & uniform.

Swim Assessment

  • Swim 200 yards without stopping (breaststroke, front crawl stroke, or a combination may be used)
  • Perform a feet-first surface dive, retrieve a 10-lb. brick, and bring it to the surface.
  • In deep water, tread water without using hands or arms for 2-minutes. 

Training Prerequisites:

  • MUST BE AT LEAST 16 YEARS OLD
  • 200 yard continuous swim
  • Tread water for 2 minutes with out hands
  • 10lb Feet First Brick retrieval in 12ft depth

Certification Requirements:

Ellis and Associates is a premier Lifeguard Certification.

  • Must attend all class dates per session
  • Session Fee includes: Class Materials, instruction, CPR mask & test
  • Passing participants receive certification and interview opportunity at YMCA of their choice

Student Evaluation

  • Completing any assigned pre-course work and demonstrating course prerequisites.
  • Attending all scheduled class times and being prompt at each session.
  • Demonstration of all defined student learning outcomes.
  • Successfully completing all items and skills provided in the Skills Competency Workbook.
  • Achieving a score 80% or higher on the course final written exam and successful demonstration of abilities in the final practical individual and team test outs.
  • Conducting oneself professionally during the course.
