Strength in Every Stroke

At the Georgette & Cato Johnson YMCA, the pool recently became a place of possibility for children living with sickle cell disease. Thanks to Cigna’s Safe Swimming with Sickle Cell program, participants were able to enjoy the freedom of the water while learning how swimming can safely support their health and well-being.

For many of these children, this experience was about more than just swimming lessons—it was about confidence, healing, and joy. With the right support and precautions implemented by our YMCA Lifeguards, the water became a source of strength for both body and spirit.

We are deeply grateful to our partners who made this program possible: Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, The Sickle Cell Foundation of Tennessee, Jack and Jill Memphis, the Shelby County Delta Sigma Theta Alumnae Chapter, and Memphis-Shelby County Schools. Together, we’re creating a brighter future in our community.

Your generosity makes stories like this possible. Keep the ripple effect going!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR BOARD CHAIR

NEW CHAPTER OF LEADERSHIP AT THE YMCA

It is my privilege to share exciting news about the future of our YMCA. The Board of Directors is proud to announce the appointment of Brian McLaughlin as the new President and CEO of the YMCA of Memphis & the Mid-South.

Brian is no stranger to our YMCA. For the past 11 years, he has been part of our Y team and most recently served as the Chief Operating Officer. With 27 years of YMCA leadership experience, Brian brings not only expertise but also a deep love for the mission of the Y. He now steps into this role following the retirement of Jerry Martin, who faithfully served the YMCA for an incredible 44 years.

Brian has already played such a big part in the growth and success of our Y. His leadership has helped us expand our reach so that we can meet the needs of even more children, families, and communities. As a Board, we are confident that Brian’s vision, strategic thinking, and heart for people make him the perfect leader to carry us into the future.

And the future is bright! In the months ahead, we are preparing for exciting projects: new wellness and aquatics centers in Hernando, MS and Lakeland, TN, and a new Early Learning Center in Stanton, TN in partnership with Ford Motor Company and BlueOval SK.

Instead of sharing a traditional headshot of Brian, I wanted you to see him at work—serving alongside others and leading with humility. That’s the kind of leader he is, and I am so grateful that he will be guiding our YMCA forward.

Hope Sneed
