Gloves On, Spirits Up: The Y’s Fight Against Parkinson’s Disease

After being diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, Wendell came to the YMCA looking for a way to knock out his symptoms. Next, he laced up a pair of boxing gloves and threw his first punch.
Rock Steady Boxing, a non-contact boxing-inspired fitness routine offered at the Millington Family YMCA, has become a force of change for those in the area living with Parkinson’s Disease.
The specialized exercise class uses basic boxing hits like jabs and hooks to slow down the progression of the disease and lessen symptoms. However, the program has become much more than just a way to stay physically active. For people living with Parkinson’s, it has become a community of support as they navigate living with the condition.
During the twice weekly classes, certified coaches use a variety of punching and speed bags to lead boxers through a series of drills that focus on reaction speed and focus. Instructors also add in cognitive workouts alongside the physical ones.
Those who regularly participate report fewer tremors, a clearer mind, improved speech and balance, which strengthens mobility and independence.
Wendell credits the class with allowing him to remain productive and perform daily life tasks.
Another important component of the program is creating an environment where patients and caregivers can encourage one another. Educational classes are also offered each month, where experts give practical advice for handling common challenges.
Rock Steady is a wonderful example of the positives that can happen when a community rallies to meet a need. The Millington Y realized there was little support in the area for those fighting this serious disease, but it needed money for the costly equipment and instructor training to launch the program.
That’s when the Barnhart’s, a local family living with Parkinson’s, heard about its benefits and became a key source of funding. Since 2019, the Barnhart’s financial commitment has helped successfully grow the program and multiply its impact.
It’s this level of support, along with grants and an annual punch-a-thon fundraiser, that allows the class to be offered for free to YMCA members.
We appreciate all of our champion donors who are willing to go the distance to make our communities healthy and strong. It’s nice to know you are in our corner.
